Lily Be is a poor brown Be from Humboldt Park Chicago. Lily be has almost died six times in her life, and knows that she is still alive to serve people and communities that could benefit from hearing her stories and brain droppings. She hosts and produces a monthly storytelling show, The Stoop. Tuesday Funk cohost Andrew Huff had a headache that was going on two days when we got together on Oct. 2, and it made its presence known in his topical haiku.

What is there to do
when your head aches for two days
and your brain is fuzz?

It's not a migraine.
No light sensitivity,
just dull temple pain.

A Tylenol helps.
Caffeine does not. Does water? Perhaps.
It's dehydration.

The leaves are changing colors, the air is growing chilly -- there's no doubt, it's fall in Chicago. We'll help you get in the spirit with some great live lit at Tuesday Funk! Autumn began its blustery descent on Chicago in October, but we were warm and cozy in the upstairs lounge at Hopleaf for Tuesday Funk on Oct. 6. The evening started with a selection of poems by Dipika Mukherjee. Next, Henri Harps shared a portion of a short story about a music teacher and a changing neighborhood in Brooklyn. Then Jenny Hatchadorian read a funny story about a girl dealing with delayed puberty while at camp.

We took a break to refill our glasses, and then cohost Andrew Huff read a couple of his topical haiku to get us back in the mood. Hannah Gamble then shared a couple of poems and a short essay, and Angel Simmons closed out the show with a mental walking tour of her Englewood neighborhood.

Hannah Gamble is a poet, essayist, editor, performer,and educator. Her first book, Your Invitation to a Modest Breakfast, won the National Poetry Series in 2011. In 2014 she received a Ruth Lilly/Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg fellowship from The Poetry Foundation. You can find her writing on the Poetry Foundation website, and in magazines such as The Believer, jubilat, Fanzine, and the American Poetry Review.

Henri Harps is a guitarist, writer, and jazz fanatic born in DC and bred in New York City. He is based now in Chicago along with his wife, baby on the way, large geriatric dog and continually expanding array of music instruments.

Jenny Hatchadorian was an award-winning filmmaker and an academic before turning to comedic essays. Her work can be found at Story Club Magazine and on the podcast Everything Good. She's read essays at The Line Break Series, Story Club Chicago, The Rialto, The Cottonwood Gallery and Story Club Cleveland, where her essay "New Family" won the audience award. Dipika Mukherjee is an internationally touring writer, sociolinguist, and global nomad. She is the author of Shambala Junction (Aurora Metro, 2016), which won the UK Virginia Prize for Fiction, and Ode to Broken Things (Repeater, 2016), which was longlisted for the Man Asia Literary Prize. Rules of Desire (Fixi, 2015) is her short story collection. Her poetry collection includes The Third Glass of Wine (Writer's Workshop, 2015), and her chapbook The Palimpsest of Exile (Rubicon Press, 2009). Angel Simmons is a multitalented artist from Chicago's Southside. She is an actress, speaker, coach, print and runway model, storyteller, author and blogger of "Love's Great Design", president of The Message, Inc., and the current "Ultimate Ms. Worldwide USA Ambassador" for the Live Out Loud Charity. Angel serves on the Board for the Karitos Christian Arts Association and the Columbia College Chicago Alumni Network. She has been featured in books, magazines, the Chicago Tribune, NBC 5 News, Crain's Chicago Business Week, Christian music, and as a guest on radio and television. She has appeared in 8 films, 14 television shows, commercials and educational training videos. Angel is the lead actress in The REECH Project's "My Last Party" Stage Production. She is the co-host of "Do Not Submit Storytelling Open Mic" in Englewood, and producer of the "Verses, Vibes & Visions" Live Lit Series.
